Hells, hells, hellish gates and caves, as well as devilish stones are frequent names for the peculiarities of the Świętokrzyskie nature. If you set out on the trail, it is almost certain that you will come across one of them. , it is even more certain that you will find the trail that will lead you to the reserve of Skałki Piekło pod Niekłaniem. And we highly recommend this place!
Piekło rocks near Niekłań - why a reserve?
The reserve was established in 1959 to preserve the peculiar rock formations. The rocks in question were carved thanks to erosion processes in Triassic and Lower Jurassic sandstones. Thanks to this, they stand out beautifully with yellow and orange, but also with a dark color against the green of the forest. At a length of several hundred meters, the rocks form two separate clusters. Following the blue trail from the car park, we first reach lower and darker rock formations, and then we reach more colorful and impressive monadnocks, up to 8 m high.
Dinosaurs have not walked the earth for a long time, but traces of their past presence have been preserved in various forms. We also find them in Poland, which leads to the conclusion that they also lived on our lands. Unique traces of dinosaurs can be found in the Gagaty Sołtykowskie reserve. It is 6 km away from the aforementioned Niekłań. The purpose of protecting the reserve is to preserve exposures of Lower Jurassic rocks and interesting mineralogical and paleontological specimens.
The reserve is located in the Stąporków Forest Inspectorate, it covers the area of the former opencast mine of ceramic clays used to make bricks.
